A Miami-Dade police officer was knocked unconscious by a suspect he was trying to fingerprint Tuesday.
The incident happened at Miami-Dade Police Department headquarters in Doral, WPLG-TV reports. An officer was attempting to fingerprint Nestor Rodriquez, who had been detained after police received a report of a threatening man armed with a knife.
As he's being fingerprinted, Rodriguez resists and eventually overpowers the officer. Surveillance video shows Rodrigues repeatedly hitting the officer until another department employee enters the room.
“Fortunately, a forensics civilian comes in and they are able to restrain him, but he begins to fight again,” Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told WPLG.
The officer suffered lacerations to his face and was taken to the hospital. He was treated and released and is recovering at home.
The incident was the second attack on a Miami-Dade police officer this week. On Monday, passengers at the Miami International Airport surrounded and assaulted an officer trying to take a person into custoday
“The continued violence against our law enforcement officers is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Director Freddy Ramirez said in a statement. "We must come together as one to protect our community and our police officers from those that choose to engage in vicious acts."
